LINE rich menu: how it works and what to put on it
Updated
A rich menu is one image at the bottom of your LINE chat, split into tappable areas. Make it from one JPEG or PNG, keep it to four to six buttons, and test it on a phone, because it does not show on LINE for PC.
Written for: You or your designer are about to make the menu for a Thai shop, salon or clinic, and you want to know the limits before you spend an evening in Canva.
What a rich menu is, and the limits LINE states
| Item | What LINE says |
|---|---|
| Image | A single JPEG or PNG file with all the menu items on it |
| Buttons | LINE for Business says up to 6 links or actions. LINE's API file allows up to 20 tappable areas |
| Chat bar text | At most 14 characters in LINE's API file |
| Where it does not show | LINE for PC on macOS and Windows |
| Who sees which menu | Default menu for everyone. A menu per user is possible only through the Messaging API |
If you set menus in several places, LINE's priority is: the per user menu from the API first, then the default menu from the API, then the default menu from LINE Official Account Manager. People who are not your friends see the default menu.
Image size: what we can and cannot tell you
LINE's own developer example creates a rich menu that is 2500 pixels wide and 1686 pixels high, and LINE says rich menu image requirements are listed in its API reference. We could not read that requirements section on 4 November 2026, so we do not print a size list or a file size limit. Check LINE's current page, or let Manager's template tell you the size, before you finalise artwork.
Worked example: six buttons on a 2500 by 1686 canvas
A nail salon, 3 columns by 2 rows
- Canvas: 2500 x 1686 pixels, the size in LINE's own example.
- Column width: 2500 / 3 = 833.3, so use 833, 834 and 833 pixels.
- Row height: 1686 / 2 = 843 pixels.
- Top row: Book a time, Price list, Our work. Bottom row: Opening hours and map, Ask a question, Promotions.
- Each button is an area of roughly 833 x 843 pixels, large enough to tap with a thumb.
- Set the chat bar text to 14 characters or fewer, for example Menu or Book now.
What belongs on it
- Booking or ordering first, top left. It is what most customers came for.
- Prices or menu, one tap away.
- Location and opening hours, so nobody has to ask.
- A button that sends a message such as "I have a question", so a person answers.
- One promotion slot you can change without redoing the whole image.
Why the menu does not show
The first thing to check is where you are looking. LINE says rich menus do not display on LINE for PC. On a phone, check that the menu is set as the default, and that the chat bar is open. If a per user menu is linked through an API, it overrides the default.
Cost
A rich menu does not count as a message. Tapping a button that opens a link costs you nothing. If a tap sends text to your OA and you answer, your answer is a reply and replies are free.
