What a LINE Official Account is, and what to do in week one

Updated

A LINE Official Account is a business profile on LINE where customers add you as a friend, chat with you and receive your messages. It is free to open, replies are free, and you only pay when you start conversations in volume.

Written for: A supplier or a customer told you to "make a LINE OA" and you want to know what it is, what it costs and what to do first before you decide.

What it gives you

LINE for Business lists the features of an Official Account. These are the ones a small business uses first.

What it costs to start

The Free plan costs nothing and includes 300 messages a month. LINE counts only messages you start, such as broadcasts. Replies to customers who wrote to you are not counted. Basic is 1,280 baht and Pro is 1,780 baht a month before 7% VAT. Our pricing guide shows how to pick.

Is it right for you?

  • Yes, if your customers in Thailand already message businesses on LINE.
  • Yes, if you answer the same questions daily and want to automate the easy ones.
  • Not yet, if all your customers are abroad and use WhatsApp. See our LINE and WhatsApp guide.
  • Not yet, if you have nobody to answer chats. An unanswered account is worse than none.

Your first seven days

  1. Day 1: open the account

Follow the setup guide. Use your real business name, because it can matter later for the verified badge.

  2. Day 2: fill the profile

Opening hours, address, phone, one clear photo, one line about what you sell.

  3. Day 3: write the greeting message

Who you are, what to ask, and when you reply. Keep it to two or three balloons.

  4. Day 4: set business hours and one auto reply

Say when you will answer, so nobody waits in silence at night.

  5. Day 5: make a simple rich menu

Four to six buttons. Booking, prices, location, ask a question.

  6. Day 6: invite your first friends

Put the QR code on the counter and your receipts. Ask ten regulars to add you.

  7. Day 7: send nothing

Read the chats you got, note the repeated questions, and plan next week's replies.

Worked example: a bakery's first month at 0 baht

40 friends after week one, Free plan

  • Plan: Free, 0 baht, 300 messages a month.
  • One broadcast to all 40 friends costs 40 messages.
  • 300 / 40 = 7.5, so you can send 7 full broadcasts a month and stay free.
  • Replies to every customer who writes first are not counted, so you can chat all day.
  • You only reach for Basic when friends x broadcasts passes 300. At 1,280 baht before VAT, or 1,369.60 baht with 7% VAT, that is a decision for later.

Decide today

Write down three numbers: how many customers message you on LINE now, how many of the same questions you answer each day, and how many messages you would send in a month if you started. If the first two are above zero, open the account this week. If the third is under 300, you can stay at 0 baht.

Questions people ask

Is a LINE Official Account the same as my personal LINE?

No. It is a separate business account with its own profile, chat tools and message plans. LINE for Business lists features such as rich menus, broadcasts and chat tags as Official Account features.

Do I have to pay to open one?

No. The Free plan costs nothing.

Can I use it from my phone?

Yes, there is a LINE Official Account app for iOS and Android, and a web version. Monthly plans cannot be bought on iOS, so buy them on the web.

Does it replace my website?

No. It is a channel to talk to customers, and a profile page. A website is still where people find and compare you.

What to do next
